The Five Day Barista class is suitable for anyone that has little or no experience and is designed to include enough PRACTICAL TIME to build the skills that enable you to OPERATE AS A PROFESSIONAL BARISTA!

This course builds the knowledge and competencies that a busy Cafe environment requires of a Barista, you will discover the workflow techniques and standard operating procedures that enable a barista to work efficiently and effectively. It is a two day course which is suitable for people that have a little experience and focuses on espresso calibration, basic equipment maintenance and Latte Art.

Your sensory journey starts here

We will begin to look at sensory evaluation and how the different brewing variables effect the taste, texture and flavours of coffee. You will learn what senses we use and how the coffee characteristics typically manifest through them so you can identify and describe them to customers. An essential requirement and the foundational aspect of the ability to recommend and promote different blends and single origin coffees.

We will be exploring coffee refractometry and coffee algebra in this class so you can start to identify under / over extraction using precise scientific procedures, which will enable you to navigate through the calibration process with a more in depth understanding of the intricacies of extraction and how to optimize your espresso.

LEARN TO IDENTIFY EXTRACTION LEVELS AND CALIBRATE WELL BALANCED ESPRESSO

You will also learn how to work in a team at high paced work environments and how to prepare multiple beverages with efficient workflow practices, as well as customer service techniques that enable you to create exceptional experiences for your guests and promote specialty coffees effectively.

MILK SCIENCE AND MORE ADVANCED LATTE ART PATTERNS

We’ll also be entering into milk science so you can understand exactly whats happening while your steaming the milk. We will also cover how to heat 1 pitcher of milk and manage pouring foam evenly into multiple drinks. And we will be building on your foundational Latte Art skills and learning the specific pouring technique for the more advanced pattern - the Tulip.

Training Outcomes

Lesson goals

By the end of this lesson you will be able to make espresso according to the international espresso standard, maintain clean equipment, steam milk and create the 5 main beverages from the café menu according to their international standard, be able to adjust the grind and maintain a consistent brew time, clean an espresso machine and grinder effectively, and follow efficient workflow practices. You will also be able to calibrate / dial in espresso extraction, program coffee equipment, identify under-extraction and over-extraction by tasting it, be able to prepare multiple beverage orders efficiently, and freepour the Heart, Rosetta and Tulip LatteArt patterns.

DAY ONE;

  • Practical - 9:45am to 3:30pm @ Cottle Coffee Roastery

  • Content - Espresso Fundamentals / Equipment Introduction / Steaming Milk / Freepouring Heart / Daily Maintenance

DAY TWO;

  • Practical - 9:45am to 3:30pm @ Cottle Coffee Roastery (see map below)

  • Content - Espresso Routine & Recipe / Adjusting a Grinder / Cafe Menu / Efficient Workflow Methods / Preparing Multiple Beverages Efficiently

DAY THREE;

  • Practical - 9:45am to 3:30pm @ Cottle Coffee Roastery (see map below)

  • Content - Espresso Calibration / Measuring TDS & Calculating Extraction % / Advanced Maintenance / Freepouring Tulip / Freepouring Rosetta / Cafe Standard Operating Procedures

DAY FOUR;

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When does registration close?

A: Course dates remain available until 1 day before they begin so learners have adequate time to watch the pre-course content.

Q: Is this an SCA course?

A: This not an SCA course though it is equivalent to SCA Barista foundation (and actually about half way into intermediate level) and you are welcome to pay the additional fee (MYR500) and complete the online exam to receive the SCA Barista Foundation certificate, simply WhatsApp HERE → after registering and we’ll arrange it for you.

*kindly note: SCA is a registered as a non-profit organisation, but they behave more like a profitable enterprise, and they do not provide any value other than intrinsic value (belief based value instead of objective value - quality is subjective and that is a FACT). We don’t promote them due to ethical concerns about their operation, but again you are welcome to pay the fee and receive the certificate after completing the online exam.

Q: Is this a face-to-face course?

A: Yes it is. There are some videos you need to watch before joining, but you will have 2 full days of entirely face-to-face training and practice at our venue.

Q: How many pax are in the class?

A: Our min pax is 1 and our maximum is 6, that way we’re able to spend quality time with each individual to develop their individual skills.

Q: Do I need to bring anything to the class?

A: You are welcome to a bring pen and paper if you like to write your own notes but everything you need for the course will be provided, including a PDF handout and lifetime digital access to all the course content.

Q: What languages are available?

A: All the courses are delivered in English (though the trainers may be able to chit chat in Chinese or Bahasa with you).

Q: Can I arrive and pay on the date?

A: Unfortunately not, we need to plan accurately for each class and require pre-payment.

Q: I’ve seen courses that run for 2-3 hours or just 1 day, why is this course 2 days?

A: Consistently good coffee requires a high level of attention to detail and learning hands on skills requires an appropriate amount of time and proper guidance in order to develop quality skills - trust us, it is just not possible to develop quality skills in less than this amount of time.
