One roast
An observation
A first roast shows you something happened. It is not yet enough time to rest the coffee, taste it as a finished drink, and return with a better decision.
Cottle Coffee Academy · Coached Sunday roasting lab
Four rolling Sunday labs plus a final tasting—built for Fundamentals graduates who want to roast repeatedly, evaluate coffee in its intended finished beverage and make better decisions with individual coaching.

Two-Day Coffee Roasting Fundamentals required. New to roasting? Start with Fundamentals.
After Fundamentals
A two-day entry course establishes the foundation. Roast development requires repeated decisions, rested-coffee evaluation and another experiment. Coffee is assessed in the beverage it was intended to become. Tristan helps each student connect the result to the next practical decision.
One roast
A first roast shows you something happened. It is not yet enough time to rest the coffee, taste it as a finished drink, and return with a better decision.
Repeated coached roasts
Four connected Sundays give the coffee time to rest, the drink time to speak, and Tristan time to help you choose the next useful experiment.
Who should join
If you work behind the bar
You already taste coffee all day. Four Sundays give you repeated, coached practice so roasting decisions become more deliberate—not another short theory course.
If Fundamentals is complete
Return to the lab with a target, roast, rest the coffee, taste the intended beverage and change the next experiment.
If you roast for yourself
Work at your own level inside a maximum-six active-student laboratory, with individual targets and honest feedback.
If mentorship is the aim
Four-Week is the development stage before deeper Ten-Week mentorship—not an interchangeable alternative to it.
If you will roast in the shop
Develop practical judgement for the drinks you actually serve, rather than collecting another attendance certificate.
If your primary objective is planning, financing and launching a roasting company—but you will not necessarily roast personally—the Business Consultancy is the more relevant branch. If you will personally roast, practical roasting development also matters.
The development method
1
Q&A plus a timely technical or industry topic.
2
Review rested coffees from previous weeks in their intended finished beverage.
3
Lunch and community time.
4
Approximately three hours of individually coached roasting at each student’s own level and beverage target.
5
Short quality-control cupping of the newly roasted coffees.
6
Review what happened and choose the next experiment.
Espresso, milk drink, filter, iced black or another defined service format—the intended finished beverage is the primary feedback loop. Cupping remains useful for quality control and comparison, but the target beverage determines whether the roast is doing its job.
A lab, not a numbered syllabus
Every Sunday uses the same complete development loop. Students may be at different stages because coaching and roast targets are individual. A new student does not need to wait for a particular theory module. Shared tasting and discussion expose students to more coffees, targets and decisions. The small active group allows Tristan to coach the next appropriate experiment for each student.
Establish your current target and next experiment.
Return with evidence and refine the decision.
Develop control through another cycle.
Consolidate learning and determine what comes next.
Review the development of the coffees after appropriate rest.
Individual development
The lab is deliberately capped at a maximum of six active students so each person can roast at their level and receive direction relevant to their coffee and intended beverage. Coaching is individual; it is not one trainer standing beside one student for every minute of the roast.
The roasting lab
Cottle Coffee Academy in Petaling Jaya is a multi-platform lab. Time on a given machine follows the teaching plan for your Sundays—not a guaranteed rotation through every platform.

Practical information
Questions
Yes. Two-Day Coffee Roasting Fundamentals is the practical prerequisite for joining the Sunday laboratory.
The rolling lab assumes students already understand the basic working sequence and can participate safely and meaningfully in coached roasting and review.
No. Every Sunday completes the same development loop while each student works at their own level and toward their own beverage target.
Once Fundamentals is complete and space is confirmed, a student can enter the laboratory without waiting for a numbered module cycle.
The Sunday follows six stages: Q&A and a timely technical or industry discussion; review of rested coffees from previous weeks in their intended finished beverage; lunch and community time; approximately three hours of coached roasting, with each student working at their own level and toward their own target beverage; a short quality-control cupping of the newly roasted coffees; then review the result and choose the next experiment.
Because the roast is being developed for how the coffee will actually be served. Cupping supports QC and comparison; the intended beverage remains the main test.
A maximum of six active students.
The final tasting is the program’s concluding opportunity to review the developed coffees after rest.
The full RM4,490 already paid is credited toward the RM10,900 Ten-Week Professional Roaster Mentorship. Remaining balance: RM6,410.
No. It is an optional +RM950 credential enhancement selected during original enrolment.
The SCA Roasting Intermediate online course, a downloadable PDF course reference guide, approximately two additional physical assessment hours, the SCA online written exam in the student’s own time, and the official SCA certificate after meeting the requirements.
No. SCA Roasting Foundation is not required before this Intermediate enhancement.
Not at the same price. The +RM950 enhancement must be chosen during the original SamCart enrolment. It cannot be added later at the same price.
Yes. The standalone three-consecutive-day SCA Roasting Intermediate course remains available at RM3,590.
