Origin of the Cottle standardBruce Cottle Establishes Cottle Coffee
Bruce Cottle, a fourth-generation coffee and tea merchant, formally establishes Cottle Coffee after taking over the South Melbourne roastery that had been in continuous operation for sixty years. His vision was simple but ambitious: to be a world-class purveyor of the finest quality coffee by sourcing, roasting and blending the best green beans from around the world. For over forty years, Cottle Coffee supplied cafes across Melbourne, throughout Australia, and internationally.
40+ years of wholesale supply beginsRichard Cottle Takes the Helm
Richard Cottle takes over the family business, bringing fresh energy to the established brand. Under his leadership, Cottle Coffee adds a cafe and retail outlet to the existing roastery, combining decades of roasting expertise with a direct understanding of what customers want at the counter. The business continues to supply artisan coffee to cafes across Australia while evolving with the specialty coffee movement.
Fourth generation leadershipFirst Beans Land in Kuala Lumpur
Cottle Coffee begins supplying single-origin coffee and blends to KL cafes. Representatives fly from Melbourne to Malaysia, personally hand-carrying freshly roasted beans to ensure the same quality standard that Australian cafes had enjoyed for decades. The response is immediate: Malaysian specialty cafe owners recognise the difference that fresh, small-batch roasting makes.
International expansion beginsFirst Malaysia Cafe Opens
Cottle Coffee opens its first physical location in Malaysia at Damansara Utama, bringing the full roastery-cafe-retail model to Southeast Asia. The space serves as both a showcase for Cottle's coffee and a proof of concept that the Australian specialty standard could thrive in the Malaysian market.

Cottle Coffee opens its flagship roastery, cafe and academy in Sunway Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. The facility houses three professional roasting machines -- 30kg, 5kg and 1kg capacities -- enabling small-batch precision roasting at scale. The Academy launches with SCA-aligned curriculum and hands-on training, quickly establishing itself as one of the region's most respected barista training institutions. By the end of the year, over forty cafes across Malaysia are serving Cottle Coffee.

Today, Cottle Coffee operates in both South Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian facility roasts fresh daily, supplies over forty cafe partners, trains hundreds of students each year, and serves home brewers through the online store and retail cafe.
